Hi! I'm Bobby!

I am a Wedding & Portrait photographer from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. My specialty is capturing real moments in real time. I have been fortunate enough to study in the home and under the direct tutelage of Mr. Denis Reggie, whom Oprah Winfrey called "The best in the business". I share the same philosophy as Mr. Reggie; spontaneous moments chronicled as if the viewer were in the same room.

I am not one for trendy, faddish styles in photography. My style is classic, heirloom-style images that will be as timely a century from now as they are today. I hope your philosophy is the same. I love clients who understand the importance of photographs.

Odds are that you have at least one old family photo that you treasure. You understand that it is irreplaceable. The moment in that photo has come and gone a long time ago. Remember that, with each passing day, your wedding or family photos will increase in value and, will one day, come to be just as treasured to future generations.

I have a rather large family of satisfied clients, and I would love for you to become part of that family today.

Life is all about moments, my friends. Do not let them pass by.

All Grown Up!

Posted on December 19, 2011

Occasionally, I am reminded as to how quickly life happens. As the popular insurance commercials say, ‘Life comes at you fast.’ Being on the backside of 50, that fact becomes more apparent to me everyday. My own children are adults now, and every day I celebrate the fact that I am now a grandfather to a wonderful gift from Heaven.

But there are those occasions where the passage of time is magnified, and this wedding that you are about to see is one of those occasions. You see, this bride and my youngest daughter spent a lot of time together in elementary school. In fact, for a time, she rode with us to school every morning. And being that her family lived right around the corner from us, we have known them for more years than any of us would care to remember. But at the time, none of us could have ever, in our wildest dreams, ever thought that I would one day document her wedding day in photos. But you never know where life will lead, and on November 19, 2011, life led me to the wedding of Beth Rodenberry & Kreg Montgomery. After seeing these photos, you must agree that Beth was the embodiment of a Princess Bride.

Congratulations, Beth & Kreg! You have both built foundations for a very successful life together! Thank you for your trust in me!

At Long Last!

Posted on August 15, 2011

Greetings, friends! I must apologize to Tiphani and Justin Gay for taking so long to get their wedding blogged. While it is good to be busy, it can also delay things getting done, too. I usually blog weddings within a few days after the event, but with back-to-back-to-back wedding weekends, I have found myself a little behind. But I hope they will forgive me when they see these sneak peeks!

Congratulations, Tiphani & Justin! It was a beautiful day!

The Rainbow’s End

Posted on July 26, 2011

One of my favorite musical groups, Fleetwood Mac, once sang the following words:

“If I live to see the seven wonders,
I’ll make a path to the rainbow’s end.
I’ll never live to match the beauty again,
The rainbow’s end.”

As I am sure that you will soon agree, I truly felt that I had arrived at ‘The Rainbow’s End’ when I was privileged enough to travel to Irondale, Alabama this past Saturday to capture the wedding memories of Stephanie Paula Petty & Togue Claude Doli, a native of Côte d’Ivoire, which we refer to (incorrectly, I might add) as The Ivory Coast on the African continent.

You need look no further than Paula’s colorful creativity to see that my reference to the rainbow is spot on target. From the bridesmaid’s dresses and bouquets to the groomsmen’s vests, ties, and boutonnieres to the spectacular reception at the Birmingham Sheraton’s East Ballroom, color was indeed the theme of the evening!

Congratulations to Paula & Claude on their new life together, and thank you for your trust in my abilities!

Senior Moments

Posted on July 14, 2011

Greetings, friends!

As I am now well into my 50s, I am sometimes accused by those closest to me as having the occasional ‘senior moment’. But the only kind of Senior Moments I will publicly acknowledge are those that let me shoot these beautiful high school seniors as you see here.Aren’t they gorgeous?

If you know someone who is going to be a Senior in the Class of 2012, then we need to talk! I can save you some serious $$$ over the prices currently being offered by the school, and you get much more than the same ol’ cattle call that’s been done for 50 years now.

Call me, and let’s talk about it!

Green Acres

Posted on July 11, 2011

Not sure how many of you remember the old television show from the 60′s named ‘Green Acres’. But that was the first thing that came to mind when I began to assemble this blog post today. You need look no further than the elegant, classy, and beautiful Stacey Dunn to see how easy the parallel can be drawn to the elegant and glamorous Eva Gabor, who portrayed Lisa Douglas, the female lead in the show.  This past Saturday, Stacey became the wife of Chad Ethridge on a hot, humid day in Tanner, Alabama. The venue was ‘The Cedars’, a working plantation with plenty of ‘Green Acres’ of cotton planted on all sides.

Congratulations to Stacey and Chad as they embark upon a wonderful life together! They are spending their honeymoon in The Dominican Republic. I wish them all the best!!

Kelly & Bryan Got Married!

Posted on June 29, 2011

Hello again, friends! Thanks for stopping by!

This past Saturday, I had the distinct pleasure of covering the wedding of Kelly Beasley & Bryan McDonald. You may remember that Bryan had asked me to photograph his proposal of marriage to Miss Kelly back in March at Northriver Yacht Club. She said, ‘Yes!’, and as you can see, they celebrated a spectacular June wedding ceremony and reception. They are currently enjoying their honeymoon in the Caribbean.

As you look through the photos I have placed online, pay particular attention to ‘the garter toss’. I really have to tip my hat to Bryan on this one, folks. It is no small secret that a lot of single men tend to shy away from the ritual … but when the garter is wrapped around a football autographed by Nick Saban … well, that ups the ante just a bit. Just look at the ‘block out’ by the young man who caught the garter ball! LOL! That is too funny!

I hope you enjoy these photos, and stay tuned … I’ve got three weddings in July! Gonna be a busy month!

:-)

A Capitol Wedding!

Posted on June 13, 2011

Greetings again, friends!! Wow, two blogs in one day?!?!? Tells you that I am kinda behind, huh? LOL! But that’s a good thing!!

Say hello to Kelly Stanek & Martin Sellbom. Just a couple of very nice people that came to sit down with me a few weeks ago about preserving their wedding day memories in photos. I am so happy that they decided to allow me to do them this service. It has been sometime since I shot a wedding at Capitol Park in Downtown Tuscaloosa, so it was exciting for me to get to do it again. And while I would love to see the County Parks & Recreation Authority spend a little money to enhance the venue, it is still quite charming with historically unique brick & stonework. As you can see, it made a great backdrop for wonderful gathering of friends who came together to celebrate the union of two beautiful souls.

After the short ceremony (it was very hot outside), everyone made a beeline for ‘The Loft’, located on Greensboro Avenue, for a nice, sit down dinner of Southern delicacies prepared by the able staff of The Cypress Inn. After dinner, the young *AND* the young-at-heart joined in for dancing .

Thank you for allowing me the privilege, Kelly & Martin … and congratulations to you both! May you live long and prosper.

- Bobby  :-)

… and now for some photos!

An American Wedding

Posted on June 13, 2011

As I have posted here on multiple occasions, I love my home state of Alabama. No matter where you go, there is always a surprise around the corner. And it’s not the type of ‘stereotypical’ surprise of movie lore or those concocted on network news. Like any other place you go, we have our own share of problems. But I would challenge to you find a more diverse and naturally beautiful place in these United States.

Case in point is ‘The American Village’, located in Montevallo, Alabama, which is just south of Birmingham. The American Village is dedicated to teaching young children about the Constitution of the United States, complete with reenactments! It is a wonderful venue and a place that all Alabamians should be proud of!

As you are about to see, it also makes a spectacular venue for a wedding!! The Chapel is simply stunning, and the barn is much more than its name implies! On Sunday, June 5th, the Chapel was the scene of the wedding of Miss Sara Chesler & Mr. Rick Means. As you are about to see, it was a spectacular affair, and Miss Chesler is truly one of the most lovely brides I have ever been privileged to photograph … and I’ve been blessed with a lot of beautiful brides!

Congrats to Sara & Rick, and thank you for a great day and many great photos ops!!

Mozel tov!!

- Bobby  :-)

Moore-Marcum Wedding

Posted on May 10, 2011

This past Friday afternoon, I had the opportunity to shoot my first wedding at The Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It truly is a spectacular venue for any event, and certainly for a wedding.

After the storm, this couple put in many hours of overtime as they both work for Alabama Power Company. It is people like this who worked tirelessly to restore power to their neighbors, and thus a sense of normalcy to a very abnormal situation. But all of that was forgotten for a few hours on Friday afternoon as everyone celebrated Karen & Jason’s marriage. Here are a few of the images from the day.

After the Storm

Posted on May 10, 2011

My friends,

As you know, it has been some time since my last update. You also may know that my city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama suffered a devastating blow on Wednesday, April 27th after being struck by an EF-4 tornado that carved a path through some of Tuscaloosa’s more densely populated areas. As of this writing, there are 41 confirmed deaths as a result, with hundreds injured, thousands left homeless, and every citizen affected to some degree. My family was spared any physical harm, and our homes escaped damage damage as well. We were extremely fortunate in that regard as the storm passed a little more than 1/2 mile north of my home. It was so close that we heard it pass by, and it is a sound that will not be soon forgotten. Tornadoes in Alabama are a natural occurrence and, thankfully, are more often than not a general nuisance with a minimum of damage. This storm, as well as the 37 others that spawned  in other areas of our state, was a ‘generational event’ … not since 1974 has anything on this scale happened in our backyard. It is my sincere and fervent prayer that it never happens again.

While many immediately went out armed with their cameras, I chose not to do so. I felt as though it would exploitative, given the magnitude of the loss. While I understand that events like this should be documented for posterity, I feel no call to add insult to injury by contributing to the already chaotic scene by being just another curiosity seeker. There were countless hundreds of those already, and my personal feeling is that many of them hindered the search & rescue effort. At the end of the day, it is my opinion that only credentialed journalists should have been allowed in the stricken areas with cameras. Anyone else was just in the way.

I don’t seek Pulitzer Prizes or awards of any kind. If they come, fine … if they don’t, I am more than content with the satisfaction of my clients. And if my clients have been honest with me, my percentage of satisfied clients is well over 99% since I began shooting professionally in 2004.

Thankfully, much of Tuscaloosa was untouched by the storm. Tuscaloosa has been my home since June 14th, 1981. In those 30 years, I have married here, and Nancy and I have raised 2 beautiful daughters here. Now we are witnessing the birth and growth of our grandson here as well. Tuscaloosa is a beautiful city with thousands upon thousands of beautiful people, and those are the ones I feel led to capture. As we all know, humanity endlessly deals with death and destruction and ugliness. But I prefer to display images such as these:
